AFTER three days of consecutive protests by the Maasai community in Ngorongoro, Tanzania, the government has given to the pressure. It has announced to immediately rescind its previous notice of revoking villages titles in their homeland, and it has promised to resume.the social services denied them about three years ago.
Commenting on this dramatic move by the government, activist Martin Maranja Masese penned down a strongly worded narrative that goes as follows:
In 2024, after the Maasai community protested for five consecutive days, the oppressive government reinstates social services that had been suspended, but only verbally.- In August 2014, the government removed the names of 120,000 voters from Ngorongoro division and transferred them to Msomera, Handeni, Tanga, while the people remained in Ngorongoro.
- In August 2024, the Minister of Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Mohammed Mchengerwa, issued Government Notice No. 673 of 2024, abolishing 11 wards, 25 villages, and 96 sub-villages in the Ngorongoro division.
- Mohammed Mchengerwa’s boss is the PRESIDENT since TAMISEMI is one of the ministries under the office of the PRESIDENT. Therefore, the MINISTER receives instructions from the PRESIDENT.
- A few days after issuing the notice abolishing the sub-villages, villages, and wards in the Ngorongoro division, the Maasai gathered and protested for five consecutive days.
- The government sent two ministers, Kabudi and Lukuvu, to deliver the PRESIDENT’s message that all social services in Ngorongoro would now be reinstated.
- Emperor DIOCLETIAN, who ruled Rome from 284 to 305, used the “problem-reaction-solution” technique, in Latin “Ordo ab Chao,” and in Italian “order out of chaos.”
- This means that you create a problem for the people, listen to the outcry, and if it becomes too loud, you present yourself as a savior from afar and issue a directive. Meanwhile, the people have already been hurt.
- Some thugs must be held accountable if we truly want to show that we care about the MAASAI. Mohammed Mchengerwa should be removed from TAMISEMI immediately.
