US imposes travel sanctions against top Tanzanian officials implicated in human rights violations during 2020 general election

ON the eve of the inauguration of Joe Biden as the new President of the United States of America (USA), senior officials of the Tanzanian government have been banned from travelling to the US.

A statement by the US department of state released today 19th January 2021 said the officials had been associated with undermining the democratic process and human rights in Tanzania.

No names were mentioned but SAUTI KUBWA understands that the targeted officials, among others, include President John Magufuli, top officials of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), top officials of the Tanzania Police Force and top officials of the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Services (TISS) – all implicated in rigging the 2020 general election in favour of the ruling regime.

The US reiterated the position earlier held by election observers and monitors that the October 2020 elections in Tanzania were neither free nor fair, and that they were not credible.
