FROM ARREST TO DEATH IN 24 HOURS: THE TRAGIC STORY OF ALBERT OJWANG

WHAT started as an arrest of Albert Ojwang (pictured above) on one afternoon, Saturday 7th of June 2025, at his home town, in Homa Bay county, western Kenya, ended in his death.

A young Kenyan and social media influencer Albert Ojwang (31),was arrested by a team of five officials from the office of the Director of Criminal Investigation from his home town in Homa Bay county where he was about to have lunch with his family.

One official told the family they had come to collect their son, Albert, for interrogation.

Albert`s father, Meshack Ojwang Opiyo didn’t hesitate to ask about the crime his son had committed, but one the officials told him it was about a message Albert posted on his X account regarding the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat involvement in a corruption scandal.

The director of criminal investigation official told Albert’s father that they will take care of his son and bring him back home safe after the interrogation.

It took 24 hours for the father to get the shocking news of his son’s death in a cell at the central police station in Nairobi.

Albert Ojwang was transferred to Nairobi on the same day from Homa Bay, western Kenya about /350km kilometres away without his family being informed.

After the news about his death, citizens especially activists in Kenya woke up to demand for justice. This led to heavy protests in some parts of Nairobi including the central police station where Albert was brought to and met his death.

Due to much attention from the mob the inspector general of Police (IGP) Douglass Kanja came out in public and gave what he called a report on Albert’s death.

The IGP said Albert Ojwang was brought in on the night of Saturday 7th of June around 9:13pm by the DCI officers from Homa Bay and was locked in one of the cells at the Nairobi central police station.

After some time, he said, the police noticed Albert was in a critical condition after hitting his head on the wall. The police rushed him to Mbagathi hospital where he was pronounced dead.

However, the Ojwang family lawyer, Mr Julius Juma said the postmortem revealed signs of severe physical trauma including head injury, neck compression and multiple bruises.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and the President of Kenya William Ruto gave their condolences and condemned the action that led to Albert’s death.

Ruto said “I urge the police to fully cooperate with IPOA” – the Independent Policing Oversight Authority – to conduct the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Senate chamber halted routine business to discuss circumstances around the death of Albert Ojwang – one of the many Gen-z murdered in Kenya recently.

Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi, led the discussion in the face of head of police Douglass Kanja, the interior cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, head of the DCI Mohamed Amini and head of the IPOA Anne Wanjiku were invited.

The team was invited to answer questions from senators, especially on how they were going to proceed with investigation of the matter.

IG Kanja, standing infront of the senate asked for forgiveness from Kenyans for having not told the whole truth. He promised to dismiss all the police involved in Albert’s death. This came after the postmortem revealed signs of torture, neck compression and multiple bruises. He also ordered deputy inspector general of police Eliud Lagat to step down for investigation.

On the other hand, during the IPOA investigation, the head of central police station in Nairobi OCS, Samson Talam told IPOA that Albert Ojwang was brought in a critical condition. The police on duty had to call him and on arrival, he found Albert “in bad condition;” and had to rush him to hospital where he died.

However, the head of DCI Mr, Mohamed Amin said “Talam is the officer commanding of the central police station and for that reason he should be treated as a prime suspect in the matter.”

The IPOA head of investigation, Anne Wanjiku revealed that the power cable of the CCTV “was not connected;” and after they connected it, they found that the CCTV had been tempered with.
